I had this odd feeling the other day that Icarus might get a bit uppity with his new bag. Oh well, returning home ought to straighten him up in no time!

i loved these posts from denver! you are such an excellent writer. i was nodding my head throughout the whole "trouble causer" story. i was raised with the same idea -- don't be a trouble causer. sometimes, i can let this devolve into "be a doormat" but mostly i think this attitude has been useful in improving my relations with other humans. i am going to see if martini on the rockies broadcasts on the net, because it sounds like a seriously good radio station.

You are correct about the Midwestern sensibility, although it is sometimes sadly lacking in Chicago--especially on the expressway. I found myself upset with drivers in Maine for letting other drivers go first. Shows me I needed a break from the dog-drive-over-dog to remember my manners. Glad you're almost on your way home!

Ellen's research is actually part of a more complicated study called "Can Man survive on his own with animals?" It was important for her to get out of the house so that the psychologists could descend upon me and take measurements without the counter-productive biases that would kick in if she was around. They take daily assessments of the "grime index" in the kitchen and the bathroom, and have been noting worriedly the height of the grass in the back yard (I swear, I was going to mow this morning, and when I got up, it was raining! And as everyone knows, you can't mow in the rain).

How they got the experiment passed through a Institutional Review Board, I have no idea, it is clearly unhealthy for the subject (me).

(All of which is a long and silly way of saying that I can't wait for Ellen to get back! Not because I'm helpless without her in a material sense — I mean, I can clean the dishes, I just don't choose to do so as often when there's no one else around to see them — but just because her prescence is necessary for my own sanity. Sigh.)

I hate to be a trouble causer, too, and I've never been in the Midwest. Hmmmm... Love your post, as always. I'm sorry, but I've forgotten (if I ever knew) what you're doing research-wise. Share? Say Hi to the Rockies for me.
