[...] After I finish these, I plan on starting a pair for my friend H., whom I have promised a pair of socks for winter. (Practically as soon as I told him that, he started asking me, “How are my socks coming?”) Of course, they will be in subdued and masculine colors, appropriate to his manly pride. (See here and here.) Fortunately, I did not have to go through the entire and dreaded “interview” for the proposed socks, just gave him two balls of yarn from which to choose.
Not true! I never said any of those things! Sarah changed a bunch of words.

It's taken me awhile, but I've gotten used to the weird dark charcoal tweedy yarn.

ROFLMAO! Absolutely classic. And I especially loved it because my mom was a librarian and occasional knitter. ;)

She only ever made one knit item for Dad that I recall, but he wore it to death. I think she made it for him in the early years of their marriage, and he was still wearing it 25 years later. It was a V-neck vest in a fine black wool, with a few narrow cables on the front, zipper instead of buttons, and was also fairly close-fitting. Do I sense a theme here?

I have not had to face the sweater "interview" because of the dreaded Sweater Curse which in this household is deemed to be in effect until we are married.

But, as the bridal shop keeps reminding me, only six more months!

Thanks for a really funny post!

You're learning, other than you're asking him what he wants. Assume the plainest style, make the back longer than the front, choose a regulation color (dark gray, navy, dark brown) and make the fit "friendly". That was my Daddy's phrase...he didn't like sweaters that argued with him (not tight anywhere and not huge anywhere).

i frankly avoid the dreaded "interview" by putting off indefinitely all knitting projects for people who are highly likely to be unhappy with the results. you are a better woman than i. :)
