Fall Challenge entries

We have two official entries for the Knit Sister Fall 2006 Challenge and Contest!

And they are:

Deb’s orange sweater, shown here beautifully modelled by Deb herself.  She’s included a lovely little leaf pattern in the deep bottom ribbing.

Deb's orange sweater

And Diane’s leaf patterned yoke sweater, made completely out of handspun.

Both are gorgeous, I think, and well-deserving of prizes!  And fortunately, since we have only two entries, both knitters will receive handspun from yours truly.

What we need from you, loyal readers of the blog, is your vote as to first and second place.  So leave us a comment or send us an email and let us know which sweater you’d place in first.  It’s a hard decision, isn’t it?

I myself would put them both in first, for different reasons.  So I’m no help to you at all.  What about you, Ellen?  How will you weigh in on this momentous decision?

Cast your vote today and stay tuned….

I vote for Diane’s sweater. While they’re both beautiful and well-deserving winners, Diane’s sweater has a more obvious leaf motif and thus earns my vote. Lovely designs, both of you!

I really did plan on submitting an entry. Honest I did, but, well, too many other things got in the way! There’s a hat (with a leaf motif) I did for a long-past Chemo Cap competition that turned out so incredibly ugly that I shoved it in the bottom of my knitting basket with the intention of frogging it and starting over. I still like the basic design idea, but in seeing the finished product I decided on a few things that needed to be changed to make it better. When I saw your contest, I thought that would be the perfect opportunity to resurrect the hat – but it never happened. What’s that they say about good intentions?

I’m voting for Deb’s. Diane’s is quite pretty and the leaf pattern is beautiful but Deb’s is so wearable – I feel like I’m Nina Garcia on Project Runway – and I like the subtlety. Great job by both though.

Both are beautiful. I can see why you’d have a hard time deciding! I think I’ll vote for Deb’s too. It’s simple, elegant and sexy. And I emailed you my sad, belated attempt (when compared to these wonderful entries).

I have just found your blog this week. You sisters are excellent writers, and may I add, hilarious as well. I enjoy your knitting photos and I am trying to go back and catch up to things before I found your blog. Thanks for this enjoyable read.

hard call. but i vote for deb’s. i would love to have that sweater. in red.

  6. Becki Says:

Both are gorgeous! I’m voting for Deb’s, because I particularly like that leaf-ribbing idea.

  7. Helen Says:

It’s apples and oranges really, but I would settle on Diane’s because the contrast of the handpainted yarn with the plain brown works so well, a new twist on a very familiar idea.

  8. Shelda Says:

I also vote for Dianne’s sweater, for mostly reasons already mentioned. But also because that leaf motif reminds me of one that I was planning to adapt to socks. It may even be the very same one, from Alice Starmore’s book of pattern sources. Who knows? But it looks familiar, and the sweater looks cozy. And I love the sleeves.

But it’s good that there are two prizes!

I vote for Deb’s. Diane’s is beutiful, but Deb’s is somthing I would actually make and wear.

  10. Ellen Says:

I’m going to remove myself from the voting, but I think both are lovely, for completely different reasons.

Luckily, Sarah’s handspun prizes are all so swell that there’s hardly any difference between first and second.

  11. Karen Says:

Geez, who can choose? I am a sucker for anything with leaves. I would use the ribbing from Deb’s on something that would suit my shape better and I would use the leafy colorwork on socks or a vest, since I don’t wear pullovers (too warm!). So in my eyes it is a (beautiful) photo finish! – Karen

  12. Arianne Says:

I vote for Deb’s because I like the subtle leaf pattern in the ribbing, but also the colour is gorgeous! It highlights what I love about autumn the bright cheerful orange of the leaves.
Also Deb’s is more wearable and though I love Diane’s sweater (its cozy autumny good for a cup of tea) and it’s handspun which is just so fitting for an autumn sweater…Um.

Oh wait. I just talked myself out of my vote. Um…I vote Deb I think…because the idea is a bit more original. I mean, Diane’s is lovely and beautiful and a perfectly executed take on an old favourite…

But if you say knit a sweater with an autumn leaf motif that’s what pops to mind…not the on Deb knit…and I like that originality. It’s a bit impractical for a northern autumn, but it’s beautiful and leafy and fresh and I love that about it.

Autumn is my favourite season and I think it’s a great way to highlight it’s best bits. 🙂

    I vote for Deb.
